5 Breast Cancer Organizations to Support (not only) in October
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and although we are firm believers in being an advocate all year long, this month does serve a huge purpose – highlighting the importance of breast awareness, prevention, and research.
Research shows that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. By routinely checking up on your breast health and educating yourself with trusted resources, you can actively increase your chance for early detection.
Another way you can support breast cancer awareness? By getting involved with organizations who are already doing the work. We’ve rounded up 5 non-profit organizations you can support this month (and every month). Check them out below.
1. Keep A Breast Foundation
Their mission is to empower young people around the world with breast health education and support. They just launched a new app that walks you through the steps to perform a self-exam – which can be a super scary space to explore on your own. This app easily walks you through every step of the process.
2. Know Your Gurls Campaign
Did you know that Black Women are 40% more likely to die from breast cancer than White Women? In partnership with Susan G. Komen, this campaign is creating print, television, and digital opportunities for Black Women to learn about the importance of screening and early detection.
3. Boarding For Breast Cancer
Mission is triple focused to prepare young people with education on early detection, to promote the importance of maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle as the best means of breast cancer prevention, and providing survivor support for those affected by breast cancer. This organization was inspired by a woman named Monica Steward who passed away at 28 from delayed diagnosis of breast cancer.
4. Rethink Breast Cancer
Rethink educates, empowers and advocates for young people worldwide who are affected by breast cancer through boldfaced campaigns, content, programs and resources. This Canada-based organization further solidifies that breast cancer doesn’t discriminate based on age or any other factor – early detection (at any age) is key.
5. The Breasties
The mission of The Breasties is to empower those affected by breast and reproductive cancers by igniting strength and positivity through connection, free retreats, wellness activities, events and an all-inclusive, resourceful online community. Their hope is to spread the message that whatever you are going through — you are not alone.
